Picamilon was developed in Russia in the 1970's to promote mental focus and relaxation. Derived from GABA and a vitamin B3 analog, it was found to be an effective carrier for GABA.

Picamilon is able to cross the blood-brain barrier where it splits into GABA and niacin. The GABA then stimulates GABA receptors producing a calming effect. GABA is the main inhibiting neurotransmitter that regulates neuronal excitability.
