Feverfew is the common name for Tanacetum Parthenium. This plant
has been used for centuries for the treatment of numerous ailments. The most common and
scientifically documented use for Feverfew is in the prevention of migraine headaches,
arthritis and PMS. Clinical trials have proven that Feverfew is an effective prophylactic
treatment for migraine.
In more recent studies, Feverfew has been shown not only to alleviate the pain of
migraines, but help reduce the inflammation of arthritis, ease dizziness and tinnitus,
relieve painful periods and sluggish menstrual flow. Feverfew's constituents are: volatile
oil, sesquiterpene lactones (including parthenolide and santamarine), and tannins. These
constituents act as an anti-inflammatory, vasodilator, bitter, and an emmenagogue.
Research has shown that in long term use of Feverfew, users have reported pleasant side
effects such as more restful sleep, relief from depression, digestion, asthma attacks,
nausea and vomiting.
Researchers and pharmacologist suggest that the sesquiterpene lactones may inhibit the
release of histamine and prostalandins during the inflammatory process, which prevents
blood vessel spasms that lead to migraines.
